Yes, here's the deal for student counsellors, therapists and coaches who're thinking about going into private practice. £99 for three 50 minute sessions within two months, plus an action plan after the third session to pick up any new tasks or skill gaps we've identified.
I know it's a big leap to start a new career or change direction - it's one I've taken a few times in my life as my career has changed and developed.
Questions can loom and intrude. Am I right for this? Can I do it? Do I have the skills for this? I understand how tough those choices can be. I think that offering a fixed price thee sessions offer is a way of both paying back some of the support I got setting out in business, and paying forward to enable other people who might be worried about the challenges of private practice make their choices with more certainty. Good question. Just saying because you can isn't good enough. My experience of starting and running my own business, and supporting others, is that it's often not the detail that people fall down on, but the big questions. Why self employment? Why private practice? What does that say about your values and your priorities? What other skills do I need?
Those are the things I can help you explore in order to help you understand the steps you'll be taking from qualification to business plan, to launch and eventually to success.
It's a limited phase of work. You don't need to know everything about running your business before you start up, but you need to know enough to understand if it's a good choice for you.
Three sessions are intended provide you with some kind of secure footing to move forward. Training is expensive, and you'll need money to support yourself as you build your business. I want to make this offer open to as many people as possible.
It might be that the outcome of three sessions includes a set of signposts, a map of additional skills you require. It might be that the outcome includes reflections on why you, why this journey.
In a minimum of three sessions you emphatically won't have solved the meaning of life or any huge existential questions, but you'll have enough of an understanding of the choice you're making to inform the immediate steps in front of you. You might even decide you want an experienced coach to join you for more parts of the journey, but I can guarantee you'll be better informed at the end of three sessions to make those sorts of choices.
I've worked in a range of industries from hospitality and finance to politics and local government. I've also held senior voluntary positions in trades unions, sport and the community. That's given me a wide ranging portfolio of skills and experience that I can bring to bear on the challenges individuals face as they make career changes or set out on a new phase of their life in self employment. I've worked with lots of people in lots of industries, but this offer is for people who want to be part of the next generation of counsellors, therapists and coaches.
I first trained as a coach in 2010, when I was working within a large local authority. My advanced diploma was from a university business school and I worked with clients up to senior officer level. I started taking private clients via referrals in 2017 as my career moved on, and I recognised the limits of working within organisations and the overlaps that led me to develop an integrative style I describe as therapeutic coaching and counselling. Fifteen years and lots of CPD later I can bring my experience, my learning and my skills to a wide variety of clients. I'm a fellow of the NCIP and you can find my profile here.
My last job in a large local authority was as a manager in their communications team - I'm not a technician but I know how to engage an audience, and how to help clients prioritize developing a profile, a hinterland and an audience. My goal is to help you understand who you want to be your audience and your client base, and how you can present yourself to them.
I can't; there are lots of governing bodies in therapy and counselling, and lots of different ethical codes. What I can do is help you understand how your values, and your personal ethics, marry up to those, so you can be sure that your policies and practices are congruent with who you are, and who you want to be.
